Using essential oils to ease pain and infection.

My go-to blend for pain and infection includes Lavender and Eucalyptus essential oils, and extra virgin olive oil. I've seen incredible results with this blend, from soothing throbbing headaches to easing toothaches, tummy bugs and lots more.

The Ingredients and Their Benefits

  • Lavender Essential Oil: Painkilling, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antiviral, and very relaxing.
  • Eucalyptus Essential Oil: Painkilling, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antiviral, decongestant, and anti-spasmodic.
  • Extra Virgin Olive Oil: Even used alone, extra virgin olive oil is painkilling and anti-inflammatory. It must be extra virgin, as the virgin and pure olive oil have few if any healing properties.

How to make the blend

It's important to mix the essential oils and vegetable oil in the proper ratios. For adults (in aromatherapy terms, anyone who is over 12 years old is an adult) you would use 2 drops of essential oil per teaspoon (5ml) of vegetable oil. For a child or anyone with sensitive skin or pregnant women, you would use one drop of essential oil per teaspoon (5ml) of vegetable oil

For instance, for adults you might use:

  • 4 drops of Lavender essential oil
  • 4 drops of Eucalyptus essential oil
  • 4 teaspoons (20ml) of extra virgin olive oil

And for children:-

  • 2 drops of Lavender essential oil
  • 2 drops of Eucalyptus essential oil
  • 4 teaspoons (20ml) of extra virgin olive oil

You can make more or less than this amount, but always use these proportions.

How to make the blend

Easy peasy! Just add the essential oils to the extra virgin olive oil. Store it in a dark glass or ceramic container place at room temperature, for instance in a drawer. Essential oils are destroyed by heat and air. Storing them in plastic will cause the oils and the plastic to rot.

How to use the blend

Apply a little the affected area and gently massage until absorbed. Don't be tempted to use a lot of the blend at first, and it will leave the skin and any clothes oils. Add a small amount at a time and allow it to absorb before adding more.

Cautions/Contraindications to the blend

Don't use Lavender essential oil for pregnant women. You could use Benzoin essential oil instead, it's also a fantastic painkiller.

For sensitive skin, it's best to do a patch test when using any new product on the skin. Apply a small amount to your wrist or inner arm, wait 24 hours, and, if there's no adverse reaction, it's safe to use.

Using aromatherapy to ease pain and infection.

This essential oil blend is incredibly versatile and effective for lots of ailments:

Sinusitis: You can apply it to the cheekbones and under the nose and gently massage the area. Adding a capful or two to a cup with a little boiling water and inhaling is also very helpful. The anti-inflammatory, painkilling, antibacterial, antiviral and decongestant properties help clear nasal passages and reduce inflammation.

Toothaches: Apply the blend on the face in the area where the pain is. Don't use it inside the mouth, that can have very unpleasant and even dangerous effects.

I was very pleasantly surprised by how quickly this blend eased toothache. A student in one of my classes was suffering a lot one day. She had an abscess on her tooth and was on anti biotics and painkillers while she waited for an appointment with her dentist.

She said taking the painkillers was like eating smarties, they had no effect at all. I didn't know if the aromatherapy blend would help in this case, but I made it up for her anyway. Within half an hour, to the surprise of both of us, the pain had disappeared.

I have since shared the blend with other people and they had similar results.

Tummy Bugs: The blend is so powerful both for easing and preventing tummy bugs. As well as the painkilling, antibacterial and antiviral properties, Eucalyptus essential oils smells so clean and fresh that it's wonderful for nausea.

You can apply it to the tummy, add a capful or two to a cup with a little boiling water and inhale it, use it in a bath or any combination of these methods.

I used this exact blend when my children and I had been in contact with a large group.  Within a couple of hours, they were suffering from a very nasty tummy bug. We used the blend, and we were the only ones who didn't get sick.

I did offer the blend to the others, but they didn't think it would help. (Despite all evidence to the contrary!)

Earaches: Put the blend on a cotton wool ball that fits in the outer ear but is too large to slip into the inner ear. You could also apply it on the face, around the ear. It is very effective but do see a doctor as soon as possible as earaches can be dangerous.
