Common Menopausal Symptoms
Menopause symptoms can include hot flushes, heavy periods, skin outbreaks, brain fog, and irritability, among others. Essential oils can be a fantastic way to ease these symptoms naturally.
The "Big Three" Essential Oils for hormone balancing
The three essential oils I've found to be outstanding when it comes to hormone imbalance are Geranium, Clary Sage and Cypress. They are wonderful for period pain, irritability, depression, anxiety, bloating, skin eruptions and other ailments we associate with the menopause, PMT, baby blues etc.
I make up names for essential oils to help my students to remember the oils and their properties. I call Cypress "Blood Sweat and Tears" for three reasons.
Blood - Cypress reduces excess blood flow. Often, when you have a period (particularly a heavy period) and you take painkillers, the pain eases, but you feel exhausted. And that's because the blood loss wears you out.
Sweat - Cypress reduces excess sweat, a unique quality that really helps hot flushes, the bane of many women's lives between 45 and 55.
Tears - In Chinese medicine, Cypress is known as a "mourning herb" and it's used to help with transitions of any kind - death of a loved one, relationship breakups, end of friendships, and even positive transitions like moving house or having a baby. And menopause is also a transition.

Lemon: 3 drops
10ml each of Sweet Almond Oil and Extra Virgin Olive Oil.
How to Make the Blend:-

Shelf Life:-
The blend will last at least 3 months, as long as the bottle is stored away from light and heat with the lid fully closed.
To Use the Blend:-
Apply a small amount of the blend to the lower abdomen and massage gently.
Don't use Cypress, or Geranium essential oil for pregnant women.
Don't use Lemon essential oil on skin that will be exposed to a sunbed or bright sunlight within 48 hours.
Refreshing sweat eliminating facial mist spray
You'll need:-
2 drops of Cypress essential oil
2 drops of Geranium essential oil
3 drops of Grapefruit essential oil
2 drops of Rose essential oil
2 teaspoons (10ml) of aloe vera gel
100ml of distilled water
How to make the facial mist:-
Mix the essential oils and aloe vera gel and stir well.
Add the distilled water.
Store it in a dark glass or ceramic bottle, with the lid tightly closed, away from light and heat.
To use:-
Pour the mixture into a spray bottle (it shouldn't be stored in a plastic bottle, as plastic oxidises the essential oils)
Shake well before each use and spray onto the face.
Contraindications:-
Don't use Cypress, Geranium or Rose essential oil for pregnant women.
Don't use Grapefruit essential oil on skin that will be exposed to a sunbed or bright sunlight within 48 hours.
The facial mist is used on the face, but it reduces hot flushes on the entire body.
I suffered quite a bit from hot flushes, one minute everything was fine, the next I'd feel like I had just had a shower only it wasn't at all refreshing! I started using the facial mist with just Geranium, Rose and Grapefruit essential oils and I immediately felt a lot less sweaty, and the effect lasted for an hour or more. Although I only used it around my face and neck, it affected my whole body.
Then I added Cypress essential oil to the facial mist, and when I used it, the effects lasted most (or all) of the day. It was such an amazing little remedy to carry in my bag!
I've shared this recipe with my students and lots of other women, and they get similar results.
Cypress is not only excellent for hot flushes, it's good for excess sweat in general.
For your teenagers' sweaty trainers, try mixing a couple of drops of Cypress essential oil (you can add other essential oils if you like) in baking soda or cornflour.
Shake the mixture into the trainers and then toss it out the next day. It absorbs the excess sweat and gives a lovely fresh aroma.
