What is Reflexology and How Does It Work?

My First Reflexology Session Blew My Socks Off (Literally)

Before I ever studied reflexology or trained as a therapist, I was the world’s biggest sceptic. Years ago, I had a horrendous chest infection that hung around for months. Antibiotics weren’t working—despite them getting progressively stronger—and while essential oils gave some relief, it kept coming back.

I found out later that I was using the wrong oils, but that's a story for another day!

When it flared up again, a friend offered me a reflexology treatment. I remember thinking, how on earth could working on my feet help a chest infection? But I didn’t want to offend her… so I said yes.

I was shocked—in the best way possible.

After just one session, I felt a definite improvement. And even more baffling? She shared amazing insights like my left lung was worse than my right. And she was absolutely spot on. I mean… HOW??

I booked in for five more sessions. By session three, the infection had completely cleared. By session six, I had loads of energy, felt way less stressed, and was in great form.

I’ve been a fan ever since.

My Best reflexology Stories

Since that first mind-blowing session, I’ve seen reflexology work its magic over and over again—for myself, for my clients, and for the students I’ve trained.

Here are just a few examples that still make me smile:

  • Headaches gone after one session

  • Severe whiplash pain eased dramatically

  • A fibromyalgia client came in barely able to walk—and danced out the door (I’m not exaggerating. She literally danced.)

  • Multiple clients struggling to conceive got pregnant after just a few reflexology sessions—and reflexology was the only thing they’d changed.

These aren’t one-off miracles. These are the kinds of results I see week in, week out.

What Is Reflexology?

Reflexology is a holistic therapy based on the principle that different organs and systems in your body are mapped onto the hands and feet.

For example:

* Your toes reflect the head and neck area

* The ball of the foot represents the chest (think lungs and heart)

* The arch of the foot links to the digestive organs

* The heels reflect the pelvic area

When a trained reflexologist works on your feet (or hands), they’re not just giving you a relaxing massage—they’re stimulating specific reflex points to help ease issues throughout the body.

Often, these reflex points can feel a little gritty or tender, like you’re stepping on sand. Those gritty bits? Practitioners believe they’re deposits of waste products that get in the way of proper nerve flow, energy flow, and blood circulation.

The rewarding part is that we can work on those areas, break down the “crystals” and often see a marked improvement.

How Does Reflexology Work?

Here’s where it gets even more interesting. Reflexologists are trained to notice signs in the feet—discolouration, swelling, tension, and temperature changes—that often match up with the client’s symptoms.

For example:

  • Headaches might show up as pale or white skin pn or just below the becks of toes 2, 3 and 4

  • Lower back pain might be felt as tenderness on the heel or inner edge of the foot

  • Stress might show up as an all-over tightness, or a tender adrenal reflexes (just below the ball of the foot on the inner edge)

While reflexology doesn’t claim to diagnose medical conditions, it can give useful insights and highlight imbalances in the body that need support.

4 Theories Behind Reflexology (That Explain a Lot)

While reflexology is incredibly effective, even science doesn’t fully explain why it works. But here are four popular reflexology theories that help us understand the results:

1. Nerve Impulse Theory

The feet are absolutely packed with nerve endings. Reflexology is thought to help unblock these nerve pathways, making it easier for the body to function properly. Those gritty “crystals” you feel? They may interfere with nerve signals—and breaking them down helps restore communication between the brain and body.

2. Energy Meridian Theory

Reflexology supports energy flow through the body’s meridian system. These energy channels (used in acupuncture and acupressure) can get blocked. Reflexology clears them, restoring balance and promoting natural healing.

3. Endorphin Release Theory

Reflexology stimulates the release of endorphins—your body’s natural painkillers and mood boosters. That’s why clients often report feeling relaxed, happy, and more resilient after a session.

4. Improved Circulation of Blood and Lymph

By relaxing the body and working on key reflex zones, reflexology helps improve circulation—supporting your immune system, digestion, and detox pathways.

Mapping the Body on the Feet: Reflexology Zones Explained

One of the most fascinating parts of foot reflexology is how the feet mirror the body. If you hold your feet together in front of you, you’ll see:

  • The inner edge resembles the spine with its inward and outward curves.

  • The ball of the foot mirrors the chest

  • The arch area represents the abdomen

  • The heel links to the pelvic area and the gluteal muscles (aka your butt)

The hands and feet are divided into 10 vertical zones:

5 zones in each foot, starting from each toe

Each body part sits within a specific zone, and stimulating that zone supports the related organ or system.

There are also horizontal zones:

* Under the toes: the shoulder line

* Under the ball of the foot: the diaphragm line

* Mid-foot: the waistline

* Just above the heel: the pelvic line

Understanding these foot zones helps reflexologists work more effectively—and makes foot reading one of the most powerful holistic diagnostic tools available.

Is Reflexology Just a Foot Massage?

This is one of the most common reflexology myths.

Absolutely not is the answer.

While reflexology is deeply relaxing, it’s much more than a massage.

You might come in with sinus issues, period pain, or shoulder tension—and walk out breathing easier, sleeping better, and feeling much more like yourself.

Regular reflexology treatments can help:

  • Stress relief and relaxation

  • Hormonal balance

  • Pain reduction

  • Better sleep

  • Improved digestion and circulation

  • Emotional wellbeing

  • And lots more

That’s the magic of working on the feet to affect the whole body.

Reflexology Case Studies: The Proof is in the Feet

Ask any experienced reflexologist and they’ll have a stack of reflexology success stories:

  • Headaches eased within a session

  • Chronic sinus infections clearing after a few treatments

  • Back pain improving when nothing else worked

As Eunice Ingham, the “Mother of Reflexology”, famously said:

“Circulation is life, stagnation is death.”

She believed blockages in the hands and feet disrupt energy, nerve, and blood flow—and that clearing them helps the body heal.

Why Reflexology Is Worth Exploring

Reflexology doesn’t offer a tidy, textbook explanation. But that doesn’t stop it from working.

What we do know is this: Reflexology is a powerful tool for improving health, wellbeing, and emotional balance.

Whether you're trying to get pregnant, manage stress, or support your immune system, reflexology has something to offer.
