Inspiration, Information and Practical Tips for Holistic Therapists and Trainees

5 Reasons Every Therapist Should Start Making Their Own Products (Especially Aromatherapy Products)

Reason #1: Making Natural Products Is Easier Than You Think

Making natural products doesn't need to be complicated. Your products, like mine, can be simple, quick, inexpensive, and fun to make. For example, a sugar scrub only needs caster sugar, extra virgin olive oil, and ideally some essential oils. Pop them into a jar, mix them together, and you’re done. It really is that easy—and so effective.

Reason #2: You’re Giving Amazing Value to Your Clients

Your clients will feel genuinely appreciated and valued.

Imagine adding a hormone-balancing balm to a reflexology treatment using essential oils specifically chosen to support hormonal balance.

Or offering an aromatherapy inhaler for sinusitis, using oils that are painkilling, decongestant, antibacterial, and antiviral.

These products don’t have to cost you much—either in money or time—and they can have a big impact.

Reason #3: You Can Sell Products (Or Bundles!) for Extra Income

You can sell your clients products they need, want, and can’t get anywhere else. Where else would they find a moisturiser made just for their skin type, mood, and personal needs—like hormone imbalance?

Even if you sold just 10 products with a €7 profit each, that’s €70 extra. You could do that in a week or even a day.

  • Ingredients: low cost

  • Equipment: minimal

  • Packaging: affordable

Yes, there are safety measures and legalities you need to follow but none of it is very complicated.

Reason #4: It Makes It Easier to Raise Your Rates

Many therapists feel they need to raise their rates but worry clients will stop coming. Often, that fear is unfounded.

Adding value with product-based upgrades makes the transition smoother. For example, you could say, “I’m upgrading my treatments. I’m adding a sugar scrub to my reflexology treatment, and my rates will go up by €10.”

One of my students did this with a simple strategy and, in her first week, made an extra €350. She was a brand-new therapist starting out.

Reason #5: Products Help Increase Rebookings and Referrals

That “sixth treatment free” offer costs you a lot—room rent, travel, childcare, and product expenses. Plus, free treatments often feel like they have less value to clients. I’ve seen it happen—clients are late or no-shows for the free one, even if they were on time for every paid appointment.

Offering small, thoughtful product upgrades or thank-you gifts instead makes your clients feel excited and valued. You could even create a fun and enticing referral scheme with your products.

What If You’re Not an Aromatherapist?

Can you still create and use products like these?

Yes, you can:

  • Make products without essential oils (e.g., sugar scrubs with oils only)

  • Add natural ingredients like flower waters, herbal teas, or fruit

  • Take a certified course (you don't need a full aromatherapy diploma) that allows you to safely make and sell products

Selling off the shelf products

If you are selling a product line or creating products in bulk, you’ll need to have them properly tested. The process is straightforward.

I hope you found that helpful,
